Once in a Lifetime Ruby!

We visited Pena Blanca Lake, which is being drained. The brown rectangular boxes you see on the sand are actually homes for smaller fish. We didn't know they were in the lake, but now we know! It protects them from being eaten by the larger fish. I was too warm to be hiking there today, so Jim decided to take me on Ruby Road. Good thing we made a pit stop before this adventure! It is a windy road with no place to turn around. The joke is that every few miles there is a sign to let you know that it is a windy mountain road! Maybe you will enjoy the pictures so much that you won't have to drive it for YOUR once in a lifetime drive!

We think this is the east side of Montana Mountain, which is the mine of what is now called Ruby. It's main element was lead, but it also contained silver, gold and copper.

After being on the very windy roads for a very long time and only seeing Border Patrol trucks, Jim said, "Well, I've never been to Ruby. We can stop there." We did see how many more miles and that number kept decreasing, so that was encouraging! Once we found Ruby and saw the sign that said it was $12 to enter it!!!! We skipped Ruby. We since heard that hippies used to meet potential visitors at the gate with shotguns! Now they keep people out with a paid admission!
